| Pride magazine publisher Dee Dixon announced the publication's closure with the January/February 2027 edition. |
Pride magazine is closing after 33 years.
The publication’s January/February 2027 edition will be Pride’s last with a “Legacy” commemoration of people, businesses, organizations and events that have helped shaped Charlotte.
Pride, founded in 1993 as Community Pride by The Charlotte Observer, is a lifestyle and culture publication that highlights people and organizations in Charlotte as well as issues affecting Black people.
Dee Dixon, an Observer sales executive when Pride launched, bought the publication in 2001 as the centerpiece to Pride Communication, which includes a public relations division.
“This is a bittersweet decision, filled with a mixture of emotions,” publisher/CEO Dee Dixon said in a statement. “When I reflect on everything we have accomplished over the years, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride. Our mission has always been to honor achievement in the African American community, and we have done that and so much more.”
Pride is the second Black-owned publication to cease operations this year, joining The County News, a weekly newspaper.
Throughout its history, Pride highlighted Black people of all walks of life from entrepreneurs, educators, and corporate leaders, physicians, artists and community advocates. The publication has celebrated accomplishments deserving of recognition, brought important community issues into focus and documented people and organizations who have shaped Charlotte.
Aside from publishing, Pride launched a series of events over the years, including the Sunset Jazz Festival, the Pride Awards, Charlotte Health Symposium, What Women of Color Want, Pride Educational Empowerment Program and Women’s Intercultural Exchange.
