Hough High leads Magnificent Seven football rankings

MATT LACZKO | THE CHARLOTTE POST

Hough High has been the class of Mecklenburg County since preseason as the top team in The Post's Magnificent Seven rankings.

It’s rivalry week in Mecklenburg County, and the Magnificent Seven has some pretty juicy clashes to close the regular season.

Hough is still tops, but below them No. 2 Chambers and No. 3 Mallard Creek square off in a scrap for the Meck Power Six title while Ardrey Kell (fifth) and Providence (seventh) are competing for the top spot in the Southwestern 7A/8A.

This week’s rankings with overall and conference record:

1. Hough (9-0, 4-0 Greater Charlotte 7A/8A). Kings of the county, per usual. Is the road to a second straight state title but a mere formality?

2. Chambers (9-0, 4-0 Meck Power Six). The Cougars might be the most surprising (if not impressive) unbeaten squad in the County. Give coach Captain Munnerlyn and quarterback Jamouri Nichols their flowers. Next is rival Mallard Creek with a chance to clinch the conference crown.

3. Mallard Creek (7-2, 4-0 Meck Power Six).  The Mavericks are doing good things these days and hitting a competitive peak after taking down Butler 35-3. Chambers, though, will provide an even clearer view of where they are going into the playoffs.

4. Palisades (7-2, 3-1 Southwestern 7A/8A). The Pumas keep rolling along after decimating Rocky River 49-0. Next is a postseason tuneup against East Mecklenburg.

5. Ardrey Kell (6-3, 3-1 Southwestern 7A/8A). The Knights beat up on East Mecklenburg 28-0 to keep their hopes for a share of the title intact. Their next opponent, Providence, will have a say.

6. Myers Park (6-3, 3-1 Greater Charlotte 7A/8A). The Mustangs were manhandled by Hough 35-0, but there’s a chance to recover with South Mecklenburg coming to campus.

7. Providence (5-4, 4-0 Southwestern 7A/8A). The Panthers get into the rankings after squeezing by Ballantyne Ridge 28-21 to remain unbeaten in the conference. Next up is a key game at Ardrey Kell.
