Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ investigation into Supt. Crystal Hill continues without a resolution of her job status.

Board of Education Chair Stephanie Sneed in a Thursday statement said the district received a report on the probe but didn’t act up on it. Hill was placed on leave with pay in June when the district launched an investigation into “matters involving administrative and operational oversight.” 

Deputy Superintendent Melissa Balknight assumed Hill’s responsibilities.

“The Board did not take any action, and the review remains ongoing,” Sneed said. “The Board understands the importance of reaching a timely resolution and will continue working to determine what is in the best long-term interest of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Because this remains an active personnel matter, the Board is limited in what it can discuss.

The district has kept mum on why the probe was ordered as well as what has been found, citing state personnel rules prohibiting public disclosure. With less than three weeks before the Aug. 25 start of school, Sneed pledged the district is prepared to move forward regardless of the investigation’s length or outcome. 

“While this process continues, the Board and district leadership remain focused on what matters most: ensuring our schools are open, ready and fully prepared to welcome students for a successful start to the new school year,” she said. “Across CMS, the work of preparing for students continues every day, with principals, teachers and staff focused on supporting our students and school communities.
