Charlotte Independence takes on Richmond in USL Cup opener

CHARLOTTE INDEPENDENCE
The Charlotte Independence take on longtime rival Richmond in the opening match of the Prinx Tires USL Cup Saturday in Richmond.

The Charlotte Independence will take on a familiar rival in the Prinx Tires USL Cup opener.


The Jacks play USL League One rival Richmond Kickers Saturday in the third annual interleague competition that includes all 43 teams in USL Championship and League One. The draw splits teams into seven regional groups with six groups made up of six teams and one with seven. Saturday’s match is the 25th all-time across all competitions with Independence holding a 13-6-6 advantage in the series. Charlotte swept the 2025 series 3-0. 

Charlotte and Richmond are in Group 6 with Greenville Triumph, Loudoun United FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Charleston Battery. Each club will play four group stage matches in the opening phase, which ends on July 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Charlotte (1-2-1, 4 points) returns to the pitch after a 2-1 loss at One Knoxville SC. Richmond comes in (1-3-1, 4 points) earned its first win of the season after a 2-1 result against Union Omaha in its last match.
