| Mia Corbin scored one of a pair of goals for Charlotte FC against Brooklyn FC to run their win streak to four matches going into Saturday's home match against Fort Lauderdale United FC. |
Carolina Ascent FC is on a heater.
The Climbers, who play Fort Lauderdale United FC Saturday at American Legion Memorial Stadium, have posted four straight clean sheet wins, the second-longest run of success in the club’s two-year history. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on Peacock.
Carolina’s latest result was a 2-0 win at Brooklyn FC in which Mia Corbin and Sydney Studer scored while Sydney Martinez racked up her fourth consecutive shutout. The Ascent (8-7-5) has turned that run of success into third place in the Gainbridge Super League table with 29 points, 2 markers behind Lexington SC and 8 points arrears of Sporting JAX. Fort Lauderdale (4-9-7) is eighth with 19 points.
“It’s just game at a time, one step at a time, one clearance at a time, one goal at a time,” coach Philip Poole said. “So not getting too far ahead and just focusing on whatever is next for us.”
After opening the spring portion of the season with three losses, the Climbers have turned the tables with the win streak.
What to look for:
• Get even at home. The Ascent is 4-5-2 in Charlotte, so a win would get them to .500 at Memorial Stadium and their third straight home victory after winter break. They’re 5-2-3 on the road.
• Take out a sub-.500 opponent. Carolina is 9-5-4 against clubs with a losing record on matchday, so the trend favors the Ascent, who are trying to close March with a 4-0 record.
• Maddie Mercado and Rylee Baisden are tied for the Carolina scoring lead with four goals each while Baisden leads the way with 28 shots. Audrey Coleman, whose five assists is tops on the Ascent, also has a team-best 14 shots on target.
