Rumor no more: Patrick Agyemang off to Derby County

CHARLOTTE FC
Charlotte FC transferred striker Patrick Agyemang to English second division side Derby County Tuesday for an undisclosed fee.

Patrick Agyemang’s time in Charlotte is over.

Charlotte FC’s All-Star striker has joined Derby County of the English Championship on a permanent transfer that ends weeks of speculation. Loaning Agyemang will fetch an undisclosed club record transfer fee, which has been reported in the $8 million range. Charlotte FC also retains a sell-on percentage for any future deal involving Agyemang, 24, who tallied eight goals and a pair of assists for the Crown in 18 games across all competitions.

His nomination to MLS’s All-Star team was a first for Charlotte.

“Patrick’s rise over the past 18 months put him on the radar of many clubs across Europe, and ultimately Derby County’s offer convinced the club and player to reach an agreement,” General Manager Zoran Krneta said in a statement. “To get a deal done it needs to be in the best interest of the Club first and foremost, but also of the player and in this case, it achieves both. He becomes the first player in our club’s history to come through our player pathway and be sold in a multi-million-dollar transfer. Patrick is a top professional and has earned this opportunity through his hard work and dedication on the training pitch since coming to Charlotte FC.”

Charlotte selected Agyemang 12th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft and after splitting time with MLS Next side Crown Legacy FC became a force with the top club. In a little more than two seasons, Agyemang emerged as the Crown’s most dangerous attacker as well as earning a roster spot on the U.S. national team, where he is the USA’s top scorer in 2025 with five goals and the only player to appear in all 12 matches.

“It’s definitely a good feeling,” Agyemang said in March. “Makes me feel like that I’ve done something well when I was in camp, and now I know I have opportunities to play with the guys from Europe as well. Now I could really compete with players in that caliber and just puts me in an environment to ultimately develop more.”

Agyemang, who scored 22 goals in 72 matches in all competitions for Charlotte, is the club’s No. 2 all-time goal scorer behind Karol Swiderski. Agyemang flashed his potential early with 10 goals and three assists in 11 matches for Crown Legacy FC. As a rookie, he scored twice in 223 MLS minutes, including a goal in the playoffs.

In 2024, his first full season with Charlotte, Agyemang tallied 10 goals and three assists in 36 matches across all competitions.
