Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas back for 28th year

JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL OF THE CAROLINAS
The Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas, the oldest Juneteenth celebration in the region, is back for its 28th year.

The Carolinas’ oldest and largest Juneteenth celebration is back for another run.


The 28th annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas will celebrate 28 years June 12-15 at Thomas and Commonwealth avenues in the Plaza Midwood community where the showcase started.  Multi-cultural vendors from as far as Africa will showcase food, art, music and culturally relevant specialty items.


The festival started with the annual Youth Cultural Camp every year at Weeping Willow AME Zion Church on 2220 Milton Road.  Young people from ages 4-16 made crafts, jewelry and tie-dye shirts.  
The June 13 opening ceremony included a Drum Circle that attracted drummers and dancers from around the world at the House of Africa on Thomas Avenue.


The festival will close with a church service with the Park Ministries at 11 a.m. on Sunday.  


In addition to the cultural celebrations, there showcase includes:


• A healthcare village staffed with health care professionals and nutritionists from local clinics and hospitals will be available for free healthcare screenings and wellness sessions.

• Children’s Village with educational crafts as well as a storyteller, and other interactive activities. Lunch and snacks are provided.


• Entertainment Stage that spotlights African drumming, dance, and music including, R&B, jazz and gospel featuring local and regional performers. International fashion designer Khadim Soung from Senegal will present a fashion show Saturday featuring original designs from his company, Belle Allure Couture.
