Faith Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The church, located at 457 Wellingford St., will hold its celebration April 27 at 3 p.m. with guest speaker James B. Walker, presiding prelate of the 7th Episcopal District.
Faith CME was conceived by Parkwood Christian Methodist Church pastor C.M. Allen, who invited Bishop Henry C. Bunton to locate a new congregation. They located a site in the Hidden Valley neighborhood and acquired a building for $150,000.
Bunton asked Allen to supply charter members and recommended a skeleton organization. Ten Parkwood members transferred to the new congregation: Charlie Williams, Marion Patton, Juanita Ardrey, Cleveland Ardrey Sr., Woodrow Clifton, John Gholston, Clennie Gholston, Patsy Harrison, Pattie Ellis, and Louis Davidson. The Rev. Phillip Scott Nelson of Detroit, Michigan, was Faith Christian’s inaugural pastor.
The Rev. Clifton Harris is Faith’s pastor.
