Levine Museum prepares for another campus move

LEVINE MUSEUM OF THE NEW SOUTH

Levine Museum of the New South is moving again.

The history museum is relocating on May 4 from a 6,000-square-foot interim space at the Three Wells Fargo building at 401 S. Tryon St. to a yet-to-be-announced location. The museum has been in the temporary site for three years.

Plans for the new location will be announced later this year, but visitors can get into the uptown space for free to see the exhibit “Charlotte: Moving Forward, Looking Back,” which tells the story of Charlotte from its Indigenous roots and early European settlers to the present.

“Our time at 401 South Tryon has allowed us to engage with visitors in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, introduce new traveling exhibits and continue telling the untold and unique stories of our community,” Levine Museum CEO and President Richard Cooper said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to Wells Fargo for their partnership in providing this space for us to grow, as well as our guests, visitors, and partners, for their unwavering support. Though we are closing this chapter, we are excited about the opportunities to expand our work in new places and ways.”

Levine Museum was opened in 1991 as a exhibit space that has hosted award-winning exhibits, brought communities together for dialogue and programming. The move – wherever it ends – won’t change the mission.

“As we look ahead, we remain committed to our mission of connecting the past to the future to realize the promises of a new South,” Cooper said. “This move is an opportunity to engage with our community in new and meaningful ways, ensuring history remains accessible, relevant, and impactful.”
