Target takes a hit: $12.4 billion in value lost after boycott

TARGET CORPORATION |
Target Corporation lost $12.4 billion in market value on Feb. 28, the day a nationwide economic boycott targeting companies that rolled back diversity initiatives was initiated. |
Target Corporation’s stock plummeted by approximately $27.27 per share by the end of February, erasing about $12.4 billion in market value.
The drop came on Feb. 28, the designated economic blackout day, and coincided with mounting backlash over the retailer’s decision to abandon its diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments.
The National Newspaper Publishers Association has acted through its Public Education and Selective Buying Campaign. NNPA President and CEO Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. said, “Black consumers helped build Target into a retail giant, and now they are making their voices heard. If corporations believe they can roll back diversity commitments without consequence, they are mistaken.”
The Rev. Jamal Bryant, pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia, has led calls for a “40-Day Target Fast,” urging Black consumers to withhold spending at the retailer.
“Black people spend $12 million a day at Target,” Bryant said. “If we withhold our dollars, we can make a statement that cannot be ignored.”
The NAACP also issued a Black consumer advisory in response to Target’s DEI rollback, warning Black consumers about corporate retreat from diversity initiatives. The advisory urges them to support businesses that remain committed to investing in Black communities.
Target is also facing legal battles. Shareholders have filed lawsuits challenging the company’s DEI policies, arguing that the commitments hurt financial performance. Meanwhile, conservative groups have sued over Target’s diversity efforts, claiming they discriminated against white employees and other groups.
“Consumers have the power to demand change, and Target is learning that lesson the hard way,” Chavis said.

Target didn't even rollback their DEI policies. They're still in place, just under a different name lol. It's amazing how you people won't even research things before jumping ship. |

Even though Black folk benefit less than any other group from DEI , MAGA has decided to make "DEI" a code word for "Black" therefore any company that announces proudly that they're going to do away with "DEI" ( meaning that they don't care about Black dollars will no longer have to worry about receiving Black Dollars! Period!!!!! |

To that idiot in the comments claiming that diversity, equity and inclusion is discriminatory towards white people,, diversity, equity, and inclusion is not discrimination towards white people. It was actually and LITERALLY put in place because white people were never hiring other races on jobs. The statistics proved it, before they even passed the law, so there was PROOF, not something we conjured up. The roots of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts can be traced back to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a key catalyst, outlawing employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. If you truly think about it, why in the world would there even be something that had to be in place, if everything were equal. And the same people of color that got those jobs had to go through an application, screening, background check and interview JUST like everyone else. So they were not just hired off the streets just because of the color. They were hired on their merit, qualifications, education or whatever other requirement that was needed to get that position. Stop making up things and do research and stop listening to false narratives without digging deep into what it even existed in the first place. SMH |

Target hasn't barred their doors against diverse shoppers or diverse employees....so they take away the name DEI - they will call it equal opportunity rights or something of the like. It is not gone! Their is simply a title change, and only because because the most qualified applicant should get the job; not based on gender or race. |

I really thought I would miss Target and Walmart, but with Cosco, minority owned businesses(Including white women owned businesses) and Mom and Pop stores I'm doing just fine. Its great. |

Never step foot in there again |

In the end, DEI is good for business. People like inclusion. I'm more likely to buy at Costco now, even when the deal isn't as good. |

Deeply disappointed in Target. I love love love shopping at Target! But I refuse to ever set foot in there again if they don't start committing to diversity and equality. Those things matter. Minorities matter. Kindness and equity matter. Target themselves ran a huge pride collection promoting queer and bipoc that several friends and I bought lots of products from! Until Target returns to being committed to inclusion and equality for all, I am never shopping there again. |

I dont like shopping at Target anyway. Only went because my daughter likes it. However I will never shop there again. I wish we had a Costco close by I would not shop at Sam’s club. However I have limited my trips. I do plan to get a Costco membership and drop Sam’s club membership altogether. |

Target will never get my money again!! I use to go there every week…. And I don’t feel bad at all. I will not shop where my people can’t be hired!! |

I have fond memories off Sunday Target runs w my girls. I liked their t-shirts and kids’ clothes, but In lwon't set foot on any business that bows to the fascist Orange clown by perpetuating white male incompetent people over qualified women and minorities. (That was the purpose of DEI policies). Never setting foot on a Target again. |

The people who stand against DEI are merely the children and grandchildren of those that stood against the civil rights movement. Their comments in this section prove their true feelings about why they dislike DEI. Take a look at the comment citing the "we waz kangs" racist joke that is used by Neo-Nazis to mock black Americans finding pride in their stolen heritage. Those are the anti-DEI folks. Target chose to pander to them and lost a bunch of money. |

I used to shop at Target at the time. No more. |

I have a Sam’s Club membership but because of them eliminating their DEI, I went to Costco and bought a membership. I was never a Walmart fan, so shop local and I stop shopping at Target over a year ago. |

Target sucks! I quit shopping there 9 yrs ago does this count as boycotting because if it does im ahead of all yall won't catch me in that store and you can take that to the bank! |

Thank you Rev. Jamal Bryant for the strong boycott leadership. |

Target, bring back DEI! |

DEI is completely discriminatory to the entire population… look at the policies and you would surely agree. You can fight racism with racism… it’s completely racist to put someone ahead of others due to race, sexuality, gender,, this 2025, wake up! Race relations were so much better prior to enlisting all DEI policies. |

My husband and I used to shop at target several times a month. Never again. Even after this I won't forget what they did. Costco hasn't backed off of their dei policies and has a ton of stuff that a Walmart or target would. My husband and I just got a membership today and have been going to local grocery stores too. |

NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES!! SO WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE ABOUT THE BUSINESS! |

We were forced to support black business during segregation, white folks didn't want your black dollar, let's show them green power, home Depot next, and on and on,we matter. |
Posted on March 7, 2025 |
I will not shop in any store that has eliminated DEI. |
Posted on March 7, 2025 |
Guys it's only OK to discriminate against Hawhitey. Of its any other group, they have special victim privilege, and we should boycott any thing that is against them. DEI until I DIE! BLM no others can come even close. Da Waz Kangz and Sheeit!! |

It is heartbreaking that they caved in to the pressure of blind hate and ignorance when they stopped supporting a group of people who are grossly misrepresented and misunderstood. It was awesome that they had swimsuits tailored to Trans women, I would have never known if I didn't see on my feed that it was one of the reasons MAGA went full "Bud Light mode" on Target. What a world we live in, where it is again widely accepted and allowed to hate and discriminate against a group of people- and the government is in on it. |

Jamal Bryant is misguided and poses as a prophet. His deceptive beliefs are causing more harm to the community. Therefore, I will keep supporting businesses in general and will not seek his advice regarding my spirit or finances. |

Charlotte Post is the first article I've read regarding the initial results of the boycott. 👏🏽I am so proud of us Black folks standing together, united!! Thank you Jesus ✝️ |

Target should not budge to the right or to the Marxist, but stick with what They believe. |
Posted on March 7, 2025 |
I haven’t shopped at Target since they decided that the DEI isn’t worth taking a stand for. I have kissed them goodbye forever. |
