Bobby Lutz Day was an emotional time for the guest of honor.
At halftime against Rice, Charlotte basketball honored Lutz, the program’s winningest coach with a 218-158 record. At the ceremony’s end, a banner was unveiled in the rafters, enshrining Lutz forever inside Halton Arena.
“It’s surreal for me to see that banner, to be honest,” Lutz said, “because I dreamed of being a coach here, but I never thought to dream about somebody hanging the banner in my honor. It’s really in our program’s honor… so I humbly accept it with pride but share it with all those people that help make it happen, and I’m so blessed to have been here when we were in Conference USA. From 1995 when I came as assistant to 2005 were just amazing years to be a part of this program.”
Charlotte (9-15, 2-9 AAC) was down as many as 16 points late in the first half but rallied for a 78-75 win behind guard Jaehshon Thomas, who came off the bench to pour in a game-high 21 points. Being a part of a lot of close games himself, Lutz expressed his approval and gave coach Aaron Fearne a nod of confidence.
“The transfers really decimated his team from a year ago, and they were really good,” Lutz said. “I talked to his team today briefly and told them that they fought. They fight every game I watch on TV or in person … and it’s just attention to details. To see them come through and shoot the ball well and shoot with some confidence was fun to watch, and I’m really happy for them, because it’s a great day for me, selfishly, personally, but they needed a win today.”

| Charlotte athletics honored former 49ers basketball coach Bobby Lutz, the program's all-time wins leader with 218 and five NCAA tournament appearances. |
Fearne was glad his team was able to win as a way of honoring Lutz and his legacy.
“Obviously, a really special day for him, and well deserved,” Fearne said. “He is the winningest coach in program history and built some amazing things here the years he was here. There’s been a lot of the coaches too, they’ve done some phenomenal things here that obviously have been recognized too. But for today, it was obviously coach Lutz.”
Lutz believes Fearne can be successful despite this season’s struggles. In the modern era of college sports, it takes donations to Charlotte’s NIL fund to get players needed to create competitive rosters.
“He’s got the program going in the right direction in spite of the record this year,” Lutz said. “I say that because a lot of times, especially today, when you’re losing it’s hard to keep players engaged, because they’re already thinking, ‘I'm going to the transfer portal.’ I knew that’s different than it was when I was coaching.
“… Their guys still believe. You can see they got down 15 or 16, and they kept fighting. The shots went in, so I think he’s well on the way. Honestly, he needs help with the NIL. Not everybody believes in spending their donations that way, and I get that, and I respect that. But if you want to compete in today's environment, you have to accept the fact that the landscape has changed.”
Fearne acknowledged the reality.
“It takes an extreme amount of financial support to put teams on the floor these days,” he said. “And that's just the reality of what college athletics has turned into in every sport, not just basketball. This is football, soccer, track, I mean, it's everything. … If you’re an avid supporter of men's basketball in this program, well, then you have to really get behind it if you want to see something out there that can really compete with other teams in this league.”
