En garde: Top fencers square off in national championships

Miles Chamley-Watson, a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist in fencing and competitor in three Olympiads, is in the Division I field at the North American Cup Feb. 14-17.

Charlotte will host America’s best fencers for a national tournament.

The Junior Olympics and Division I North American Cup Feb. 14–17 at the Charlotte Convention Center includes men’s and women’s competitions in three disciplines – epee, foil and saber – split among divisions based on experience and skill:

• Division I: Olympic level

• Cadet: Fencers under 17 years old

• Junior: Competitors under 20

More than 2,750 fencers from 45 states will compete, including eight from Charlotte and 109 from North Carolina. Admission is free and tickets aren’t required.

The Junior Olympics tournament will be held  daily from 8 a.m. until the medal ceremony, which is usually around 8 or 9 p.m.

Eleven Olympic fencers — including 2016 bronze medalist (team men’s foil in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), three-time Olympian and 13-time Pan American champion Miles Chamley-Watson; 2024 women’s foil team champion Maia Weintraub as well as individual silver medalists Alexander Massialas and Daryl Homer — are in the Division I field.
