| Biff Poggi, who was fired as Charlotte 49ers football coach Monday, went 6-16 in just under two seasons with the program. Tim Brewster will take over as interim head coach for the final two games of the season. |

Charlotte 49ers football coach Biff Poggi has been fired.
Poggi, who had a 6-16 record at Charlotte, was dismissed Monday after going 3-7 in his second year. Associate head coach Tim Brewster will be the interim head coach for the remaining two games.
Poggi’s five-year contract, which expires Dec. 31, 2027, includes a $500,000 base salary plus $500,000 in Athletic Foundation funds for a $1 million total annual salary. If Poggi was fired without cause, the school would owe him the base salary for the remainder of the contract.
In Poggi’s first year as head coach, the 49ers went 3-9 with wins against South Carolina State, East Carolina and Tulsa. In year two, Poggi compiled three wins against Gardner-Webb, East Carolina and Rice. The 49ers gave up more than 40 points on three occasions in 2023 and have given up more than 50 points on three occasions in 2024.

When reached for comment, Charlotte Athletics Director Mike Hill declined until speaking with the team first. However, he did comment in a press release from the athletic department.
“I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons,” Hill said. “No one can question Biff’s passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone’s expectations. As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er Football, we will be looking for a leader to take our program to the next level as a consistent bowl and championship contender.”
