Theater looks at place and displacement in Charlotte

Mixed Metaphors Productions’ “Kudzu: A Story of Belonging” examines the intersection of place and displacement Aug. 22-Sept. 1 at QC Family Tree’s Big Blue House, 2916 Parkway Ave.

A debut theater production will ask why – and which – Charlotteans call the city home.

“Kudzu: A Story of Belonging,” which runs Aug. 22-Sept. 1 at QC Family Tree’s Big Blue House, 2916 Parkway Ave., combines theater, music, and art to ask the question and connect housing justice to the concept of home.

“In this show, we’re imagining the future by exploring the nuances of the present housing crisis,” said Kat Martin, founder of Mixed Metaphors Productions, an artist collective that produced SwimCap and FixaPlate and is collaborating with QC Family Tree. “What assumptions do we have about Charlotte? In a time when 113 people move to Charlotte every day, and 55 Charlotteans are evicted daily, what myths do we want to believe?”

“Kudzu” looks at who belongs in Charlotte and stories about belonging through neighbors like The Person Packing, who has been given 90 days to leave their home, and The Flipper, who knows how to spot “good bones” in a house. The immersive 55-minute show includes a walk through an Enderly Park home with 10 audience members that integrates audience and participants.

The cast includes actors Sunnee Goodwin, Cecilia McNeill, and Teresa Long in addition to live performances from music director Liza Ortiz.
