The 120-unit Legacy at Carr Heights Senior Apartments on West Boulevard opened on July 12 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony

A 120-unit apartment community for elders has opened its doors on West Boulevard.

The Legacy at Carr Heights Senior Apartments, which hosted a ribbon-cutting on July 12, is a public-private collaboration between the West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition, Westside Community Land Trust, City of Charlotte and nonprofits. The $31 million development for people aged 55 and older is named for Nathaniel Carr, a Black landowner and farmer, who along with his wife Lizzie established the neighborhood in the early 20th century.

“Housing for seniors is a pressing need in Charlotte and The Legacy at Carr Heights demonstrates the benefits of a public-private partnership in addressing this need,” said Steve Bien, president of Soho Housing Partners, which partnered with The Paces Foundation to develop the property. “This development reflects the progress and promise of the Nathaniel Carr community: providing modern, high-quality housing units for seniors 55 years old and older.”

The project, which sits on a 4-acre space, is financed through public, corporate and private partners including Fifth Third Bank,  Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Charlotte Housing Opportunity Investment Fund, City of Charlotte Housing Trust Fund and Inlivian. The West Side Community Land Trust bought the land and leased it.

The community includes one- and two-bedroom apartments with controlled entry, fitness and community center and planned resident activities.

“The apartments at The Legacy at Carr Heights not only provide much-needed housing for seniors, but also help to strengthen the community as a whole,” said Steven Bauhan, The Paces Foundation’s chief development officer.
