The Post earned eight awards at the North Carolina Press Association Journalism Contest.
Half of the publication’s awards were first place in their division: community coverage, sports coverage and headline writing (Herbert L. White). Melvin Harris Jr. earned the top spot in religion and faith reporting for his article detailing barriers to church leadership women face.
The press association is a trade organization that represents 159 daily and weekly newspapers across the state in addition to periodicals.
Harris, who spent summer 2023 as an emerging journalism fellow at The Post after graduating North Carolina A&T State University, is now a news associate at NBC News in New York.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by peers, especially in a field as competitive as journalism,” said White, The Post’s editor in chief. “As a hyperlocal community publication, it’s incumbent upon us to produce journalism that resonates with readers and audiences across all our platforms. Our staff is small but dedicated to great reporting.”

White earned second place in sports news reporting on Johnson C. Smith University football and Cameron Williams did the same in sports feature writing for a profile of JCSU football player Quavaris Crouch, a Harding University High School graduate who overcame academic and personal challenges for a fresh start in his hometown.
Williams, who joined The Post in October 2023, is a 2022 UNC Charlotte graduate.
Photographer Troy Hull earned third place in sports feature photography for his images in the Crouch article while White was third in election and political reporting for an article on changes to North Carolina’s ballot deadline rule.
The NCPA will acknowledge the top journalists on Sept. 19 at the association’s annual convention in Raleigh.
