‘Young Frankenstein’ alive on Matthews stage

A Mel Brooks comedy classic is coming to the stage in Matthews.

The Matthews Playhouse production of “Young Frankenstein” will run July 12-28 at Fullwood Theatre. The award-winning Broadway play includes well-known Charlotte performers under the direction of Jill Bloede with choreography by Emily Hunter and musical direction by Matt Primm.

“Young Frankenstein” has been nominated for three Tony Awards and won the Outer Critics Circle award for Best Musical in 2008. The show contains mature content and is recommended for people age 13 and up.
Tickets are $18 to $26 at www.matthewsplayhouse.com/youngfrankenstein.

There will be a Pay-What-You-Can performance on July 11 at 7:30 p.m. Seating is general admission and audiences will be seated on a first come, first serve basis. The recommended donation is $10 per person and a portion of the donations from the evening will benefit Time Out Youth, a local nonprofit serving LGBTQ+ youth.

“Young Frankenstein” is based on the 1974 movie of the same name and the musical created by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, the award-winning creators of the Broadway hit “The Producers.” The musical follows the story of Frederick Frankenstein (played by Neifert Enrique), grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, who brought a corpse to life.

Frederick travels to Transylvania when he learns he’s inherited his grandfather’s estate and picks the departed grandfather’s work with a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (Nick Culp), German lab assistant Inga (Gabriella Gonzalez), and the castle’s stern housekeeper, Frau Blücher (Paula Baldwin).

When Frederick duplicates his grandfather’s results in bringing a monster to life, complications set in when his fiancee Elizabeth (Mary Lynn Bain) shows up. Chaos breaks out when The Monster (Matthew Corbett) is freed by Frau Blücher and escapes.

Joshua Brand (Inspector Kemp), Owen Tesch (Ziggy) and Steve Bryan (Hermit) round out the cast of characters along with an ensemble.
