Emily Moxley, who played college soccer at UNC Wilmington and North Carolina, is the sixth player to sign with Carolina Ascent of the USL Super League.

Carolina Ascent signed another player with Charlotte ties.

Defender/midfielder Emily Moxley, who was born in Charlotte and grew up in Cary, signed with the USL Super League side ahead of its inaugural season. Moxley, who graduated North Carolina in December, spent the first part of the 2024 season with Orlando Pride in NWSL.

“I am beyond excited and grateful to join Carolina Ascent FC,” Moxley said in a statement. “I am honored to be part of this historic moment for the team and the city of Charlotte, North Carolina.”

Moxley is the sixth player to sign with Carolina Ascent. The club signed former Portland Thorns midfielder Taylor Porter, a North Carolina State alumnus; forward Rylee Baisden (Perth Glory, North Carolin Courage); and midfielders Jill Aguilera (Chicago Red Stars) and Kelly Ann Livingstone (Seattle Reign) last week. Vicky Bruce, the original player to sign with the club, joined last month.

As a fifth-year senior in 2023, North Carolina led the ACC in goals allowed with eight and Moxley was one of four Tar Heels to start in all 23 matches, ranking fourth in minutes played with 1,577.  A year earlier, Moxley tied for fifth in assists among ACC players (eight) and earned a spot on the all-tournament team after scoring the game-winning penalty kick against Duke in the semifinals and an assist in the title game.

“We are really fortunate to sign a player of Emily’s quality,” Ascent head coach Philip Poole said. “Each time I see her perform, I am more convinced that she will go on to have a long professional career. Emily offers us so much versatility on both sides of the ball, and her competitive mentality is undeniable when she steps on the pitch. She is another Carolina native we are excited to have representing Carolina Ascent FC.”

Moxley transferred from UNC Wilmington to North Carolina ahead of the 2021 season, where she started all 18 matches for the Tar Heels. She was fifth on the team in minutes played, and her six assists were tied for the team lead.

Moxley played on the NC Courage Academy club team in high school and was ranked a Top 100 player in her class by TopDrawerSoccer.
