Junior League's Little Black Dress Initiative addresses poverty

The Junior League of Charlotte is raising awareness and money to combat poverty with its annual fundraiser.

The weeklong Little Black Dress Initiative started March 11 with a goal of raising $40,000 through use of the iconic fashion statement on social media and a social capital campaign to raise awareness about poverty in Charlotte.

JLC members and participants from partner organizations will wear the same black dress or outfit as a show of solidarity and a call to action. Participants are encouraged to use social media to spark dialogue and drive online donations.

“We are in a moment where increases in food and utility costs are impacting the wallets of families across Charlotte,” JLC President Jonell Logan said in a statement. “While some can make adjustments in spending to cover those costs, far too many of our neighbors are stretched thin. The Junior League of Charlotte believes that partnering with organizations that serve families experiencing financial insecurity is critical for a stronger and inclusive Charlotte.”

All proceeds will go to unrestricted monetary support for Junior League and community partners programs to invest in the leadership and development of its members. The JLC has more than 1,300 members engaged in hands-on community and internal volunteer placements, contributing to 15,000 hours of community service annually.

Little Black Dress donations will go to:

• Funding community partners

• Training opportunities and leadership development for JLC members

• Recruitment and retention of JLC members
