| Johnson C. Smith added 15 midyear transfers for the 2024 season, with five defensive backs and three quarterbacks joining the Golden Bulls. Five players with Division I experience were added through the portal. |
St. Augustine’s football exodus is Johnson C. Smith’s gain.
Five of the Golden Bulls’ 15 midyear transfers are former Falcons, who like JCSU, are in the CIAA. St. Augustine’s, which went 0-10 last season, have gone through three head coaches in four seasons after firing Howard Feggins in October.
The most prominent of the St. Augustine’s transfers is Deandre Proctor, a receiver who caught 31 passes for 402 yards three touchdowns last year. Quarterback Marion Littlejohn, who played at King’s Mountain High, completed 6-of-11 passes for 61 yards in three games.
St. Aug’s wasn’t the only school with multiple transfers at Smith. The Golden Bulls continued their recent success adding players from FBS programs with former Charlotte 49ers Omari Orgertrice, a linebacker and Mooresville High grad, and defensive back Shamar Baker, a Mallard Creek alumnus.
Their biggest midyear catch – and perhaps the program’s most-prized recruit in the modern era – is Harding High graduate Quavaris Crouch, an honorable mention All-Big 10 linebacker at Michigan State who is moving to tailback.
The Golden Bulls used the transfer portal to address the secondary with five signees. In addition to Baker, Hines and Jamison, JCSU landed Shaw’s Elijah Wilson, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound free safety and Nasier Currie-Sudler, a 6-foot, 185-pounder from West Georgia.
The Golden Bulls recruited for immediate offensive line depth with the signing of Jamari Mason and Anthony Dantzler to compete for starting spots. Starting right tackle Jamal Covington and left guard Tyler McBeth are out of eligibility.
The quarterback room will be crowded in the spring with the addition of Littlejohn, Darius Ocean (Valdosta State) and Kennique Bonner-Steward (Fayetteville State). Bonner-Steward was a backup with the Division II Broncos, FBS Temple and FCS Rhode Island, but earned I-Meck 4A most valuable player in 2018 as a Hough High senior.

Ocean, who also graduated Hough, has a similar career resume at FBS Western Kentucky and Division II Valdosta State.
