Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont opened its first prototype store in Charlotte, a 21,000-square foot facility on Shopton Road in the Steele Creek community.

Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont has unveiled its “store of the future.”

The nonprofit opened its first prototype store in Charlotte’s Steele Creek neighborhood on Jan. 19. It’s Goodwill’s 34th store in the region and creates 30 new jobs along with an estimated economic and fiscal impact of $3.4 million a year, including wages and sales.

Like concept stores in Rockingham and Shelby that opened in 2022, the 21,000-square-foot retail store on Shopton Road includes space for a locally owned business and community room that can be rented. The nonprofit is expanding its regional footprint to provide more opportunity for people to repurpose items that help create career training and employment opportunities.

“This prototype store not only creates a new look and feel for Goodwill, but it contributes to the economic growth of the community,” said Jose Luis, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont’s chief operating officer. “This location will provide well-paying, quality jobs with career support and advance our mission of providing free job training and career coaching to people in the Charlotte region.”

In 2022, Goodwill provided support to more than 7,700 people and training programs are focused on construction, customer service, IT and workplace skills.
