FAMU alumni have met their match in AD Tiffani Sykes

Florida A&M alumni have criticized athletics director Tiffani-Dawn Sykes for her handling of the Rattlers' football coach search, including a lack of communication with alumni on the process.
As I watched, read, and listened to all the drama surrounding Florida A&M football these past few weeks, I just kept thinking, “Please don’t quit. Please don’t quit.”
But I didn’t have to worry. The Tiffani-Dawn Sykes I remember from our time together in the CIAA doesn’t have quit in her, and if anybody can ride out this FAMU tsunami, it’s “The Original Big Girl” (her words).
It's amazing how quickly “your folks” can turn against you. This doesn’t mean that Black people should look the other way when one of us is in the wrong, but the way FAMU alumni, boosters and students have been kicking up, you’d think Sykes put on a police uniform and shot an unarmed person of color in the back – while running away.
Even more embarrassing was all this nastiness right before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Wonder if they marched downtown singing, “We shall overcome, some D-A-A-A-Y!? Yeah, go sit down somewhere.
It all started to fall apart after coach Willie Simmons decided to leave for Duke. Looking to hire quickly with National Signing Day approaching on Feb. 7, Sykes had someone in mind. But when word got out that it was a Division II coach with only two years of head coaching experience, the stuff hit the fan. Hard.
They told Fort Valley State coach Shawn Gibbs in so many words, and I’m using the PG version: “Don’t you bring your behind to Florida. We don’t want you, and you won’t get any support from us.”
One alumnus even compared FAMU football to Michigan and said they expect the same caliber coach. Alumni want FAMU interim head coach James Colzie III to have the job. That should be a suggestion, not an ultimatum.
First off, who’s to say that a DII coach can’t be successful on the FCS level? Rod Broadway went from North Carolina Central to Grambling. Bill Hayes from Winston-Salem State to N.C. A&T. Pete Richardson from WSSU to Southern.
Division II has fewer scholarships and a smaller recruiting budget, but what if that same coach has more to work with. Gibbs is 16-5 in those two seasons.
FAMU did give Gibbs a present, however. FVSU extended his contract with a surefire raise.
Sykes received a no-confidence vote from the national alumni association and enough name-calling to start her own dictionary – from the same folks I’m sure that were kissing her behind in Atlanta at the Celebration Bowl.
People want to make Tiffani’s harassment about sexism. A large portion of it is.

Athletic administration is still a man’s world, and there are plenty of men, especially the OLD guard, who don’t think women should be in charge of an athletics department. Heck, they don’t think women should work in sports, period.
But here’s an ugly little secret: some women, especially the OLD guard, feel the same way, and they can be vicious!
But these Rattlers have met their match.
“The Original Big Girl” has a solid family support foundation and a strong backbone that hasn’t been broken the 20-plus years she’s worked at various HBCUs.
FAMU hired the right person for the job. And those same critics will again be kissing some behind before it’s all over.

James Colzie was just run off. Maybe AD Sykes' planned wasn't so bad...NCA&T gave Gibbs a chance in a much tougher conference at that.

Well Bonnita Best, this commentary didn't age well. Tiffany is gone and the head coach that she didn't want is now 2-0. The "Voice of Bragg" announcer that she hired , even though the fan base preferred the previous announcer, is getting roasted! Tiffany will go down as a failure as AD at FAMU. Good riddance!

Why would a Charlotte paper reference FAMU’s situation? This article is a poorly written & researched piece that was designed to defend poor performance and proven allegations of ineptitude. There are receipts, videos and documents to substantiate these claims. This article should never have been published but as another commenter observed, "... mentioning MLK, really. You don’t know the whole story." You indicated that FAMU Alumni have met their match in AD Sykes. She already lost this recent battle you referenced. This article did not age well, take this down to save the shred of credibility you have left, (in your area). Trust this final point...my FAMULY has yet to be matched! The OBG will be dealt with just like the writer of this article, The FAMULY will be keeping all these receipts.

Bonita, This article was written in poor taste. It's disrespectful to thr very stake holder Ms. Sykes has to go to for financial support. It's also antagonistic. One has to ask themselves, "am I hurting my friend by writing this article". I believe you wanted to help her as I'm sure she came to you in distress. Being that you are supportive friend, maybe you should recommend that she resigns from the AD position and search for a position that is more related to her compliance skillet. Clearly she is not doing well as an AD at one of the most storied and prominent HBCU's in the nation. On her watch the following happened: A winning head coach was lost Many key recruits A star recruit Key football staff members Her decision making caused the following: A PR nightmare for the university Strained relationship with FAMU NAA, Rattler Boosters, F Club and 220 club A vote of no confidence from the very same alumni group she came to at the 11th hour for money It is clear that being an AD is not her strong suit. Maybe learning at a small junior college would've been a better stepping stone rather coming to a school like FAMU. If you are her friend, it's time to have a come to Jesus and encourage her to either seek help from another succesful AD, or look for a position that will value her skills in compliance. This is a professional mis-match and it's ok to say "hey, maybe this isn't a good fit for me". Instead of writing articles like this and basically widening the gap between her and the stakeholders that are connected to her employers. This wasn't a smart article or a smart move.

Think long and hard before you cross Tiffany Sykes worked with her in the CIAA. She is what FAMU needs

One word-misleading. This is about a proud championship tradition, that was missed during a very dark time in Florida A&M University history, and a chance for the school to repeat the success of last year with players, coaches and staff that know the system and have chemistry. This has nothing to do with the ADs sexual identity. If you do your research, you will find that the Rattler Nation has a history of firing ADs, 99% of which have been men. This is fundraising, customer service and support position. The alumni, boosters, players, staff and fans all wanted to keep their championship staff together. Stay tuned, since you decided to watch the FAMU channel. If the AD still goes outside, even though the interim coach is on both the search firm and search committee lists, that would be very telling of how she really feels about hear "dream job" in Rattler Nation. In the end, I wish the AD and the school success but it appears that bridges have been burned and skeletons, on both sides, have been buried.

Sometimes DEI goes too far. The "me too" movement has caused a lot of unqualified appointments to be made to satisfy folks. Does anyone think Kamala Harris is qualified for her position? Condoleeza Rice would be. Barbara Jordan would have been, etc. We need to get over just choosing someone based on unqualified criteria.

As a third generation rattler, I don’t agree with some of slander she has received over the past few weeks. It’s been distasteful and unbecoming of a rattler. With that being said, at no other big time football program would the AD hire a coach the fan base overwhelmingly did not support. If anything it’s the exact opposite. Give the people what they want. It makes no sense to make an enemy of your fan base. And the coach she was bringing in couldn’t even beat Quinn Gray (FAMU legend) who was also interested in the job.

Curtis Johnson is the biggest problem at FAMU. Big Ole sucka! Man works at the school while running a blog dissing folks at the school and leaking information. How does that fly? That's heaux man poop!
Posted on January 24, 2024
Reading this is very embarrassing to HBCU's as a whole. If the Stakeholders and the AD can not agree, then why not just remove her from the position? Make a decision, it is that simple.
Posted on January 24, 2024
There is a big difference between being competent...visionary...confident...resolute...than...being inexperienced...stubborn...petty...and...insecure...AD Sykes must be more "flexible-minded" and work with the important stakeholders...in collaboration...as she "makes" a "wise" decision on a new FAMU football HC...

My previous comment was deleted. Is this how you run your paper. I am a proud, FAMU graduate. This article is not well written. Did you interview anyone. Did you get an account from BOT, NAA. I is obvious the writer did not get her degree from FAMU’s school of journalism.

Well said FAMU supporters and family.

I just want to ask her out on a date before FAMU end up firing her.

I have seen a Facebook Post written better than this... This is sad that our AD used this outlet to get everything off of her chest. To create even more contention between the Alumni base and herself shows why she is unqualified for this job. The smartest person in a room is the one who knows when to stop talking. Now once again people will bring up the fact that you were a bottom candidate and this childish outburst shows that you are not adult enough to sit in the seat that you occupy. You need to get a mentor and learn the business of being an AD. THIS IS NOT THE WAY... And next time just post this on a Facebook page because you embarrassed the newspaper you write for with this 8th grade essay...

Trash article. Trash opinions. This is why FAMUANS want to hire people who love FAMU. It's obvious AD Sykes would rather burn the institution down vs swallow her pride.

Even more embarrassing was all this nastiness right before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Wonder if they marched downtown singing, “We shall overcome, some D-A-A-A-Y!? Yeah, go sit down somewhere. This paragraph is missing its closing quotation mark. I would offer more edits but my Florida A & M degree affords me with the ability to charge for my work. Your editor, on the other hand, clearly works for pennies.

I saw the Charlotte reference and thought why is someone there commenting on FAMU’s situation. This article needs to be removed. Also mentioning MLK, really. You don’t know the whole story. A little journalism,- research, interviews and maybe someone could take this seriously. She has not met her match neither has the writer of this article.

I am a die-hard FAMUAN who supports my university by volunteering my time and my dollars, unlike many of the so-called bleeders of orange and green who don't contribute anything but environmentally polluting hot air. Most think buying a football ticket amounts to significant support for the university; it helps much less than we think. We brag about raising a few thousand dollars to contribute to a multimillion-dollar program and believe we can make demands instead of suggestions. We constantly fight among ourselves while the real enemies wait anxiously for our demise. We are ready with opinions when we have no responsibility for the outcome. Ms. Sykes will be the only one to blame for the athletic decisions, especially if they're unpopular. It's her job and career on the line, so she needs to be able to make decisions that affect both. I'm sure that's what all the nay-sayers do or should do in their lives and careers. It's one thing to receive and evaluate input in decision-making; it's another when suggestions become demands. The easiest way to lose a job is trying to please everyone and therefore pleasing no one. Most, if not all, HBCUs suffer because of little financial support from alumni. Most, if not all, HBCUs are constantly in one crisis after another. Most, if not all, of those events are met with voices of discordance and, minimal harmony and effective communication regarding practical solutions. We raise hell about winning athletic teams, while many student-athletes go hungry, have poor living conditions, can't buy books, etc., etc.. The bottom line is, what will you do for an HBCU whether you graduated from one or not? If you didn't graduate from one, choose one of the many existing ones and send in a few dollars. If you graduated from a PWI, send something to an HBCU of your choice. I'm sure your PWI can fare just fine without your contribution. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. By the way, leave FAMU to the FAMULY.

Lets remember the famu board is appointed by the Governor and board of Governors. Ultimately its the board who is to blame. Look at the heirachy. You think Governor D wants FAMU to progress? They just hire those who do what they say. I even heard she went along with hiring who the players wanted ;however, the board doesnt want them. Tiffany doesnt contol anything, neither does Larry. It's a state school run by the board of trustees. They must pay attention to FAA because they contribute a good portion of the coaches salary.

You need to be fired for this mess of an article!!! You can not run a successful program without the support of the fan base , the NAA , the boosters and the people who are FAMU diehards. Its not sustainable and she will soon find out !! Absolutely ridiculous !!

This has to be one of the most poorly written articles I've ever seen. This is definitely not written by a scholar who graduated from a College of journalism.
