Monifa Drayton appointed interim ASC president

Monifa Drayton has been appointed interim president of the Arts & Science Council until a permanent successor to Krista Terrell is hired.

Monifa Drayton is the Arts & Science Council’s new interim president.

Drayton, who was appointed to the position Monday, is chair of the Mecklenburg Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, where she oversees a $270 million budget and its social impact strategy. She has been an executive for more than 20 years with several organizations, including principal consultant for the Drayton Leadership Group and more than 20 years at Atrium Health.   

Drayton will remain interim president until a new president is hired to succeed Krista Terrell, who announced her resignation in August. She will leave ASC in December.  

“Monifa is an accomplished, respected and recognized leader in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Her significant experience leading high performing teams and nurturing mission-driven cultures will be invaluable during this transition,” ASC Board Chair Tony Perez said in a statement. “Monifa’s strong management background and passion for the arts will help ensure ASC continues its critical work to support the cultural sector as we look to the future.”

Drayton, a graduate of South Carolina State University who earned her master’s in public administration from UNC Charlotte, has served in multiple leadership positions in healthcare, including operations and business development. Since 2022, she has been principal consultant at the Drayton Leadership Group, a strategic planning, leadership development, DEI and teammate engagement consultant.

With Charlotte being one of the fastest growing cities in America, ensuring that we support diverse creatives and small businesses will continue to be the priority as it plays a vital role in ensuring that our community continues to be a destination city for all.”
