A business incubator that would give Black-owned businesses the tools to succeed is being developed in Charlotte.
The Black Business Owners Corp. is launching Black Business Hub as the epicenter for entrepreneurial research, resources, and retail. The hub will be a self-sustaining physical location, to serve as an accelerator for entrepreneurs, innovators, and creatives.
“BBOC strongly believes transformational change requires strong partnerships and impact-driven collaboration,” Cathay Dawkins, founder of BBOC said in a statement. “We encourage local small businesses, organizations, corporations, and leaders to proactively get involved with the planning, fundraising, and execution of the Black Business Hub.”
Hub organizers cited the COVID-19 pandemic and renewed interest in social justice as reasons to create the hub. The confluence of national and global issues placed more focus on the lack of resources available to the Black business community, which is historically undercapitalized and disproportionately impacted by public health and economic emergencies.

BBOC’s development plan is being led by its Hub Development Committee chaired by Shemaine Pickens.
