Jada Carter, a third-year student at Florida A&M University, is Miss Charlotte-Mecklenburg 2023.

Jada Carter was crowned Miss Charlotte Mecklenburg 2023 at J.M. Robinson High School in Concord on Feb. 4.

The Miss Charlotte Mecklenburg Piedmont competition is a preliminary to qualify for the Miss North Carolina 2023 title in June and included two titles: Miss Piedmont and Teen.

Carter, 20, was one of five women to compete for Miss Piedmont. She promoted her social impact initiative of “#Get Engaged: Keeping Girls Committed to STEM,” aiming to shrink the gender gap by encouraging women and girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

“Women only hold 24% of STEM jobs,” said Carter, a 2020 Providence Day School graduate and third-year computer science major at Florida A&M University. “As Miss Charlotte Mecklenburg, I intend to empower the girls and women of North Carolina to pursue careers in the STEM fields and shatter the glass ceiling.”

For her talent presentation, Carter, a dancer for 15 years, tap danced to Whitney Houston’s “Wanna Dance.” Eight teens competed in the Teen competition, with two winners qualifying to compete for Miss North Carolina’s Teen 2023.

Other winners were: Jordan Garrick (Miss Piedmont) Mia Geter (Miss Charlotte Mecklenburg’s Teen) Leigh Ariel Staton (Piedmont’s Teen).
