Livingstone College is dispatching its mobile food unit to serve homeless people in Salisbury as part of its Martin Luther King Day celebration.

Livingstone College is observing the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by serving the homeless.

On Jan. 13, the Salisbury school’s Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts department will deploy its 53-foot mobile food unit at the Salisbury Civic Center parking lot at 315 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue South from 3-5 p.m. Culinary arts students and college volunteers will serve food as part of the school’s inaugural service project.

Students will serve chicken noodle soup with crackers, turkey and cheddar and roast beef and Swiss sandwiches, complete with lettuce, tomatoes and condiments, snacks, fruit, and bottled water.

In addition to dining space, the mobile food unit has a television, fireplace and functional kitchen.

“Livingstone College will serve food to our neighbors in need in honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” President Anthony Davis said. “Engagement is a part of our prescription for success. No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

Livingstone is collaborating with Dennis Rivers, the Salisbury Police Department’s victims/homeless liaison, on the project. According to Rivers, the Civic Center is a central gathering place for homeless people. The college will collect and distribute gloves, socks and scarves and social work majors will also be on hand for community engagement and conversation.

The King holiday is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage people to volunteer in their communities.

In addition to Livingstone’s inaugural King service project, the college is planning to expand upon it to include not only homeless people, but the underserved and the under resourced.
