Post journalists earned first place in three categories and a pair of seconds at the North Carolina Press Association journalism awards.
Herbert L. White and Ashley Mahoney earned first place for News Enterprise Reporting for the series “After Lockdown: Life for the Formerly Incarcerated” published with support from the Pulitzer Center.
Hadiya Presswood earned the top spot in News Feature Writing for the article “Riding rail to revival – or ruin?” regarding how addition of the Lynx Gold Line fundamentally changes gentrifying Black neighborhoods in Historic West End.
Health reporter and Report For America corps member Aaliyah Bowden earned first place in Religion & Faith journalism for her story on stresses hospital chaplains face on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Melba Newsome earned second in the investigative reporting category for “Climate of Inequity,” on how a culture of identifying low-income Black neighborhoods and lax local and state environmental enforcement leaves eastern North Carolina communities at risk. White also earned second for sports coverage.
The NCPA awards ceremony is Aug. 25 in Raleigh.
