| Tyrell Jackson, a former Fort Valley State quarterback, is transferring to Johnson C. Smith, where he'll be reunited with head coach Maurice Flowers. |
Former Fort Valley State quarterback Tyrell Jackson is following coach Maurice Flowers to Johnson C. Smith.
Jackson, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound sophomore from Greenville, S.C., announced he was entering the transfer portal with the intention of enrolling at JCSU, where Flowers was appointed in January. In 2021, Jackson played in nine games, completing 141-of-249 passes for 1,827 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as the Wildcats went 5-5 in Flowers’ lone full season. Fort Valley went 2-0 during the pandemic-impacted spring 2021 campaign.
Jackson has experience with Flowers’ spread offense makes him the early front runner for the starting job when fall drills open in August. He’ll join a quarterback corps that includes Malik Evans, who exited spring ball as the starter and recruits Cam Kromah of Independence High and Robert Adams of Lower Richland (S.C.) High.
The Golden Bulls’ 2021 starters, Antonio Wallace (graduation) and Ollie Shepherd (opted out), are no longer on the squad. They were a combined 101-of-193 passing for 1,210 yards with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Kromah, who transferred to Independence for his senior season after three years at Kannapolis A.L. Brown, hit 66-of-129 passes for 1,007 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. Adams connected on 79-of-155 attempts for 1,570 yards, 16 scores and seven interceptions last year.
Regardless of who lines up behind center, he’ll have a remade receivers group to catch the ball starting with second team all-CIAA pick Reggie Bryant. Hickory High’s Dontae Baker, David Hamilton from Jacksonville, Florida, and Brevin Caldwell, who played at Myrtle Beach Collegiate Academy and Ardrey Kell High.
