The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg is endorsing a mix of incumbency and comeback candidates in municipal elections.
The political action committee on Wednesday backed incumbent Charlotte City Council member Braxton Winston and former representatives LaWana Slack-Mayfield, James Mitchell, and Patrick Cannon in the Democratic at-large race. Mitchell resigned from the panel in 2021 for a business position while Slack-Mayfield left council in 2019 after losing at large.
“I am honored and humbled to have received the highest number of votes for Endorsement and continued support from the Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg,” Slack-Mayfield wrote Thursday in a campaign email.
“I wake up daily with a desire for ‘Better’ for our community, with YOUR support we can have better. Better access to gainful employment. Better transportation that connects our workers to jobs. Better housing options. Better air quality and Better service from your elected officials.”
Cannon, a former council member 1994-2013, resigned as mayor in 2014 when he was arrested on federal charges of accepting bribes – a first in Charlotte history. He served 22 months in prison and released in 2016.
The caucus also endorsed the comeback campaign of former Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board chairman Arthur Griffin, who is running for an at-large seat on the Mecklenburg County board of county commissioners. Griffin, who was on the school board from 1988-2003, and chair from 1997-2002, was endorsed along with incumbents Pat Cotham and Leigh Altman.
The BPC's endorsements were for contested Democratic primary races only.
