Mental training is heading to the forefront for youth soccer.
Charlotte Independence Soccer is partnering with Soccer Resilience to provide personalized mental training and coaching. Players will learn to address and control performance-related anxiety and stress, overcome adversity and pursue purpose for improved performance – Soccer Resilience’s four pillars.
“We are absolutely thrilled about this partnership with Soccer Resilience,” Independence CEO Thomas Finlay said in a statement. “To be successful on and off the field, it is critical to develop a strong and confident mind. We believe that our members will benefit tremendously from the direct access, professionalism, and expertise of Soccer Resilience. We are looking forward to seeing results of this partnership and seeing the impact it will have on our players, coaches and parents.”
Soccer Resilience was co-founded by former Charlotte Eagles player Wells Thompson, who won the 2010 MLS Cup with the Colorado Rapids as well the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and Superliga with the New England Revolution in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Thompson’s professional career also included time with the Chicago prior to joining the Eagles and his eventual retirement in Charlotte.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to partner with Charlotte Independence Soccer Club,” Thompson said. “We commend CISC for being one of the first youth sports clubs to make this critical investment for its entire club: players, coaches and parents. This will undeniably provide a competitive edge on and off the field. But more importantly, it’s a huge step of thought leadership that we hope will infiltrate the entire youth sports industry.”
The Independence formed a youth club under the banner of the USL Championship first team in 2019. They merged Lake Norman Soccer Club, Carolina Rapids Soccer Club and Discoveries Soccer Club to form one of the largest youth soccer clubs in the state. Players participate under the Independence banner from recreation level soccer through the Women’s Premier Soccer League and USL.
