Media personality Nick Cannon’s philanthropy is helping a Charlotte family in need.
Cannon, who grew up in Charlotte, recently presented $10,000 to Kimberly Timmons-Hampton to help her family with medical and education expenses. The presentation was made recently at Spectrum Center along with recording an episode of Cannon’s “Wild N' Out” TV program.
After Cannon’s foundation put out a call for single mothers in need of financial help to the Charlotte Hornets Foundation and Crisis Assistance Ministry, Timmons-Hampton, who has two children, was chosen for the grant. Timmons-Hampton has a 5-year-old autistic son with special needs assistance in school. Timmons-Hampton, who worked in financial services for a decade with benefits, a 401(k), and medical insurance, lost her job after complications from surgery that required a second emergency surgery. She lost her job when her financial services department was downsized and didn’t qualify for severance or medical insurance, too.
Timmons-Hampton is in training to earn certification to become a medical office administrator.
Cannon, an alumnus of Quail Hollow Middle School, was presented a key to the city and acknowledged with his own day by Mayor Vi Lyles. Last year, Cannon’s foundation partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in a competition for students titled America’s Teen Mogul and Career Readiness Training Program. ATM’s student business plan competition exposes young people age 12-19 to high-demand career and entrepreneurship opportunities. Cannon’s foundation also installed a new basketball court at Smithfield Elementary School in Charlotte.
