Rudean’s Restaurant is closing its doors Sept. 17
Less than a month before her 60th anniversary year in business, Rudean Harris is closing her café and bar.
The restaurant, located at 2228 Beatties Ford Road, is in the same location where Harris began in 1957. Its last day is Sept. 17.
Harris started the restaurant at age 16 under the name West Charlotte Drive-In in an unincorporated part of Mecklenburg County. She wasn’t old enough to have a license to sell alcohol, only burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and soft drinks ranging from 5 to 35 cents. Once the city of Charlotte incorporated the area, William “Bill” Covington, one of Charlotte’s first black police officers, and his sister Lillie sought to buy the drive-in and Harris accepted their offer for $300. It was a “lot of money then,” she said.
Harris took her rather lucrative buy-out money and moved to McDowell Street in the Brooklyn community, where she started operating as Rudean’s, selling food and soft drinks only. She eventually became old enough and got a beer license.
Harris ran the business to help her father, Curtis Robinson, support her five siblings after he moved the family to Charlotte from their hometown of Orangeburg, S.C., after her mother died.
The eldest of the six children, Harris gave up a normal teenager’s life for that period back then to help her father. As the primary cook in the household, she transferred those skills to sandwiches and soft drinks.
Many of her loyal, long-term customers represent at least three generations of families. Over the years, Rudean’s set up in four other locations, ultimately winding back up at the original spot at the corner of Beatties Ford Road and Keller Avenue, now Dr. Webber Avenue.
Rudean loyalists are planning for a major retirement send-off party at a site to be determined.

I moved to Charlotte in 1996 from Omaha Nebraska a long way from home I was introduced Ms Rudean because I was curious about who owned this restaurant because the friends that I had met would tell that they wanted to take me to the restaurant because I was in search of some Southern cook I finally made it to Ms Rudeans and I fell in love with the friendly welcome when I would speak everyone wanted to know where I was from I would tell them Nebraska they didn't think that Black people lived there. And then I met Ms Rudean and she told me that your not from around her and I said no mam I'm from Omaha where is that and she laughed and said we will have to talk some more about this Nebraska she said that she had to go back into the kitchen and I said nice meeting you. And after that I was welcome and when ever I was there she would set at the table and talk to me about being so far home and if ever needed anything to come and talk to her over time we became friends she was like a mother to me I live in NC 4 years I worked CK supply Co I lived in Emerald Bay Aptms off of Archdale I now live back in Omaha I miss Ms Rudean I want to say hello she kept me on the straight and narrow I truly miss Charlotte 1300 miles from home that's where I became a man.

I know this post is late but I am just seeing this article. I worked for Ms. Rudean years ago when I lived in NC. Prior to that I would visit on occassion since her daughter and I were college roommates. I wil never forget the things she taught us and always had a funny story to tell. Ms. Rudean is like no other. Motherly love with a nice twist of discipline but there was no way to not love her. I am so happy, so pleased and wish her all the best in her retirement. It was an honor getting ro know you. May God bless and keep you Ms. Rudean. I will forever love you!

Im definately going to miss this place. I have also been going for a long time. I havent been in a long and decided to go get me some wings Friday night.Im not a drinker anymore, nor do I like to psrty anymore but that is the best chicken that I have ever tasted.Friday was the first time that I have ever tasted the potatoe salad. It was awseome! Have a blessed retirement! I truly like seeing the black family love. The people laughing and dancing like they have no worries in the world. All of this because of the love that you had for your family. It used to be like that, but very seldom do you find it. I giess thats why I would come from the Gashouse to share the love and to feel some love from perfect stranger. Goodluck!
