Asa Kryst of Fort Mill, a South Carolina alumnus, has signed with the Charlotte Independence.

An open trialist has earned a roster spot with the Charlotte Independence.

Asa Kryst of Fort Mill is the fourth player player from the Charlotte region on the Independence roster.

“We are happy to sign another top local player who showed well at our open trial,” coach Mike Jeffries said.

A 2015 graduate of South Carolina, Kryst scored 13 goals and had three assists in 67 appearances for the Gamecocks. A product of Charlotte Soccer Academy, where he won the Atlantic Region Crown, Kryst scored 32 goals over three seasons (2008-11).

“Asa possesses the pace and technical ability to beat players in one-on-one situations, is capable of playing in any of the attacking roles, and has a creative bent in front of goal,” Jeffries said. “I look forward to seeing Asa develop within the group.”

Charlotte (3-2) has 23 players under contract. The Independence travel to the New York Red Bulls II on May 1.
