Tunde Sotunde MD is CEO and president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, the state’s largest insurer with more than 3.7 million members. Prior to taking the job at BCBSNC, Sotunde, a pediatrician by training, held leadership roles as a physician, educator, and a health plan executive. He is accomplished at implementing innovative health care delivery models and improving the quality of care for patients.

Before assuming the top job at BCBSNC, Sotunde was president of Anthem’s Medicaid and    related state government business across 23 states and Washington, D.C., with 7.3 million members and $33 billion in revenue, where he drove a 13% membership increase in enrollment over a two-year span. Sotunde collaborated with health care providers to move more than 50 percent of provider payments to value-based care arrangements and generated improvements in member satisfaction scores as measured by the National Commission for Quality Assurance Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey.

Sotunde also worked as president and CEO of Anthem subsidiary Amerigroup Georgia, where he led membership and revenue growth and helped it become one of the first Medicaid plans in the organization to achieve excellent accreditation status from NCQA.

A native of Nigeria who attended boarding school in England, Sotunde practiced at Port of Spain General Hospital in Trinidad and later served as chief of pediatrics at Syracuse Community Health Center in Syracuse, New York. He has trained medical students and residents as a pediatric clinical instructor in at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse and at Vanderbilt University Medical   Center. Sotunde served in chief medical officer and other roles in both payer and provider organizations at key divisions of Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Solera Capital.
