Rhonda Mapp is helping less fortunate families get ready for school.
Her Kool Kutz Barbershop and Salon is offering 100 free haircuts and hairstyles as well as book bags and school supplies to children August 23. Doors open at 10 a.m.
Kool Kutz is located at 5025 North Tryon St. Suite 109.
This is the event’s third year and Mapp, a former player with the WNBA’s Charlotte Sting, says the number of people who show up always exceeded 100. Mapp said that while they may only be able to cut hair and give hairstyles to kids, sponsors will be on hand giving away things that will be useful for students returning to school. The event has received donations from local partners and Mapp says families should take advantage of services being offered.
“Nike has donated 100 book bags along with pens and pencils,” she said. “We’ll have other local sponsors that have donated school supplies, Fuel Pizza will provide free pizza as well as doctors providing free asthma screenings and eye exams.”
The barbers and stylists working the event are giving their time for free.
“The heroes in this back to school campaign are my barbers and stylists because they don’t have to do what they do,” Mapp said. “They’ll be standing for four or five hours giving their services for free. So I want to pay respect and honor what they do,” Mapp said.
Mapp, an Asheville native, said she gets her sense of wanting to give back from her father.
“My father was a basketball coach and as a little girl I would watch my father be a father figure to many kids in Asheville who didn't have fathers,” she said. “He would open the gym up to allow the community to come in as an outlet off the street.”
