| Masking up to prevent coronavirus transmission also brings facial irritation. A clean mask and facials can keep facial outbreaks at bay. |
We’ve got a global pandemic in 2020 and maskne, too.
Mask acne is a byproduct of wearing a face covering in which the irritation can cause breakouts. Charlotte-based celebrity makeup artist Jami Svay, owner of IDOLIZE Brows and Beauty Huntersville (9826 Gilead Rd. C-108 Huntersville) shared a few tips for how to stay safe during the pandemic without sacrificing what your face looks like when the mask comes off. She recommends a facial every 1-3 months for a deep clean and removal of debris that a normal everyday wash at home cannot reach without bruising.
“If you can do facials, that is great,” Svay said. “That is the only way that is going to combat wearing a mask.”
Keeping your mask clean is just as important as wearing one.
“Keep your face washed and keep your mask washed,” Svay said. “I ask people when was the last time you washed your mask, and they will say, ‘I don’t know.’ So, keep your mask washed and pray for the best.”
Now may also be a good time to change your skincare routine. If you exfoliate once a week, increase it to two or three times per week.

“Every two years you need to change your skincare regimen because your skin gets immune to whatever was in the products you were using, and it stops working,” Svay said. “Switch up your skincare routine, exfoliate and keep your mask washed.”
Maintaining a good skincare routine does not have to cost a lot of money. Products from a pharmacy or superstore will still get the job done.
“Do not ever feel bad you do not have to spend a lot of money on your skincare routine,” Svay said. “As long as you are doing something, that is the main thing. You are cleansing. You are toning. You are moisturizing. You are doing it.”
