|The new owners of the Excelsior Club in Charlotte's Historic West End are enlisting Black architects and interior designers to restore the building as well as develop a boutique hotel on the site.|
The club, which opened in 1944, was a staple of Black culture, not just for Charlotte, but for the region before closing in 2016. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named it as one of the nation’s 11 most endangered historic places in 2019 due to its state of disrepair.
Kenwood Investments, a developer based in Sonoma, California, purchased the property in Historic West End in January. The new owners have expressed their intention to restore and remodel the existing structure. Kenwood Investments CEO Darius Anderson is now assembling what he called a “dream team” to do just that, including designing a boutique hotel on the property as well.
The company is also seeking Black interior designers for the project. They will work alongside Charlotte architect Darrell Williams, owner and founding partner of Neighboring Concepts, which among the largest Black-owned architectural firms in the Southeast.
“We must do more than preserve and protect [historic Black spaces],” Anderson said in a statement. “We need to restore them to their places of prominence. That’s what we intend to do with the Excelsior Club.”
