North Carolina A&T promoted interim basketball coach Will Jones to the job full-time after leading the Aggies to a 14-5 mark, including 12-4 in league play. |
Will Jones’ audition as North Carolina A&T basketball coach earned him a full-time job.
Jones, who went 14-5 as interim head coach last season, was named Aggies head coach June 18. He is the 11th head coach in the school’s NCAA modern era that started in 1952.
“I have always prayed for the chance to lead at the best institution,” Jones said. “North Carolina A&T is the best, largest and most progressive (historically black college or university) in the world. I think God has answered my prayers. I’m excited and ready to lead our program back into national prominence.”
Jones took over as acting head coach on Dec. 24 and led the Aggies to a second-place finish in the MEAC by going 12-4. A&T earned a first-round MEAC tournament win over Howard before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2019-20 season. Jones was also named MEAC coach of the year as well as Box To Row coach of the year.
“I am delighted to see coach Jones get this opportunity,” A&T Athletics Director Earl Hilton said. “Will did a wonderful job last season of keeping our men’s basketball team focused on success on the court and in the classroom, so we know he is committed to creating a championship culture while also making sure our student-athletes graduate and are prepared to be positive contributors to society.”
