Taste of the New South is now CataLysT.

Actor and activist Danny Glover kicks off the Levine Museum of the New South’s new initiative on April 16. It takes place at McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square at 7:30 p.m.

Like its predecessor, CataLysT promises food and fundraising, in addition to a thought-provoking evening. Proceeds raised from the event benefit the museum.

“For 28 years, Levine Museum has served as a catalyst in Charlotte, uniting diverse communities around our shared history to create a single city dedicated to equity and opportunity,” said Kathryn Hill, president and CEO of Levine Museum of the New South.  “Our first annual CataLysT honors that tradition, and we are thrilled to present Danny Glover at this inaugural event.”

Whether you know Glover from his recurring role in the “Lethal Weapon” franchise or “The Color Purple,” he is as much an activist as a longtime professional creative. He stresses utilizing art as a means of championing education, equity, as well as social justice. Glover served as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Program, where he focused on issues such as poverty, disease and economic development in Africa, Latin American and the Caribbean. Today he serves as a UNICEF ambassador.

Levine staff historian Willie Griffin will moderate a conversation with Glover. They will discuss education, as well as what the name of the event implies, how to serve as catalysts for change in communities, as well as moving forward as social activists.
