North Carolina A&T State University is rising among top American colleges according to a national survey.

The Greensboro school is the nation’s top public historically black school according to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges 2020” rankings, and breaking into the numeral rankings among national universities for the first time. A&T rose to No. 6 among HBCUs, up a spot from last year, and No. 1 among public HBCUs. The university’s peer score within that ranking was second among all HBCUs, with only Spelman College scoring higher. As recently as 2016-17, A&T ranked 10th overall among black colleges and second among public HBCUs.

“As a land grant, a high-activity research university and as an HBCU, we work every day to set aggressive goals and to constantly strive to reach them in service to our students, our alumni and the state of North Carolina,” A&T Chancellor Harold Martin said in a statement. “Our continued improvement in the U.S. News rankings provides a strong annual reminder that we are moving in a very positive direction, that we are focused on the right things and that our colleagues recognize the ever-rising quality of this institution. We’re very pleased with this year’s results.”

In the national universities ranking, A&T earned an 11-way tie for No. 281 among campuses with the likes of Florida Atlantic University, North Dakota State University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. U.S. News cited A&T’s growth in peer score, alumni giving, retention and graduation rates, and entering SAT and ACT scores for the score.

A&T has an enrollment of more than 12,500 students – most in school history – and is the largest HBCU in the country. The school’s enrollment has grown by 17% since 2014.

The school, which a national leader in STEM education, especially in its engineering school, drew a record 25,000 applications for admission for the 2019-20 academic year – 6,000 more than last year.
