Conversations tend to go further when food is involved.

Leading on Opportunity will host On The Table CLT, a community-wide Knight Foundation initiative on Oct. 23. The event will take place throughout the day at locations across Mecklenburg County. Residents can volunteer to host a conversation for potluck-style discussions in homes, libraries, parks, or places of business. Participants will focus on the theme of belonging. The question posed by Leading on Opportunity is what does it mean to feel at home in Charlotte-Mecklenburg? The goal is to inspire grassroots movement.

“Knight Foundation believes that successful communities are equitable, inclusive and participatory,” Charles Thomas, Charlotte’s Knight Foundation program director said in a statement.  “On the Table CLT puts this belief into action. We are excited to partner with Leading on Opportunity to bring this important initiative to life for the third year. On the Table CLT continues to provide a simple and accessible opportunity for citizens to engage in discussions and action that propels Charlotte forward.”

On the Table is modeled after the 2014 civic engagement initiative curated by The Chicago Community Trust. Training sessions will take place on Sept. 10, 11 and 25 for those interested in hosting a table.

“We are very excited to host and facilitate this year’s On the Table CLT,” Leading on Opportunity Executive Director Stephanie Cooper-Lewter said in a statement. It is extremely important for residents of varied backgrounds to convene and build community, sharing their perspectives and recognizing commonalities. On The Table CLT brings our opportunity movement directly to our diverse community to capture immediate feedback that can be used to inform systems change that increases opportunity for all.”
