Another soccer game is coming to Bank of America Stadium.

The United States Women’s National Team is heading to Charlotte Oct. 3 against South Korea in one of their five-match FIFA World Cup Victory Tour dates. They open the tour on Aug. 3 vs. Ireland at the Rose Bowl in California, Portugal in Philadelphia on Aug. 29 and again in Minnesota on Sept. 3.

We're excited to welcome the U.S. Women's National Team to Charlotte,” Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper said in a statement. “This summer, fans across the country united in support of this great team and we worked hard to deliver this match for soccer fans and our partners. Bringing this game to our stadium is further proof that Carolina is soccer country.”

Why this matters:

1) It’s their first stop in Charlotte since 2000.

2) Under previous Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, outside events—minus the Belk Bowl in December—did not take place at the stadium during football season. The Panthers host Jacksonville on Oct. 6.

“From a city standpoint, we’re using our asset, which is Bank of America Stadium, whereas it only got used roughly eight times a year under Jerry Richardson,” said Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eiselt.

3) Tepper wants a Major League Soccer franchise, and has aggressively pursued one since buying the NFL team last year. MLS reaffirmed Charlotte is among markets considered for expansion during MLS All-Star events this week.

“Now the new owner, Mr. Tepper is clearly interested in using it more, and encouraging it to be about soccer,” Eiselt said.

4) Charlotte hosted a Gold Cup group stage doubleheader in June, as well as an International Champions Cup match last month.

5)  Charlotte entered a first of its kind agreement with ICC last month to bring the summer tournament back for five consecutive years.

“You still had thousands of people who came out in 100-degree heat, which I cannot think of a worse thing to go through,” Eiselt said of the less than 40,000 who attended last month’s Arsenal-Fiorentina match. “It’s interesting to go to these games and see these crowds. It’s a totally different crowd than you get at football games.”

6) USWNT players were in Charlotte last month for the House of Soccer in Romare Bearden Park as well as Arsenal vs. Fiorentina, including star Megan Rapinoe.

“I think the addition of an MLS and an NWSL team would be incredible here,” Rapinoe said at the House of Soccer. “You can see the support just for a friendly of two teams that aren’t even from the same country, don’t even have a rivalry. I feel like this city is quickly becoming one of the premier sports cities in our country and to bring something new and exciting like MLS to Charlotte would be pretty dope.”

7) Four first-time World Cup winners from the Cary-based North Carolina Courage will be here for the match: defenders Crystal Dunn, Abby Dahlkemper, midfielder Samantha Mewis and forward Jessica McDonald.

Other notes:

1) This will be head coach Jill Ellis’ penultimate match before stepping down with a record of 102-7-18. She is the first coach in history to win two Women’s World Cups.

2) The NWSL regular season ends on Oct. 12 with the Courage facing Sky Blue. The Courage, who won last year’s league championship, also host the final on Oct. 26 as well as the Women’s ICC later this month.
