Chiante Wester is Livingstone’s new head women’s basketball coach.

Wester, who had been assistant coach at Virginia State since 2006, helped the Trojans to five CIAA regular-season division championships, a league tournament title and four NCAA tournament berths. She replaces Tiffany Silver, who led Livingstone to a 30-64 record over three seasons. The Blue Bears haven't finished a season above .500 since the 2016-17 squad went 14-13 in Silver's first year.

“This is a new day. I am truly excited to be here and bring back a winning tradition to the Blue Bear country,” Wester said … “There is a lot of talent here, and I plan to bring the best out of each member of this team.”

Wester worked primarily with guards at Virginia State and assisted in player development, on-court coaching and individual skill instruction and recruiting. Her administrative responsibilities consisted of coordinating and directing community relations and outreach projects.  She also oversaw academic study hall and academic progress for the program.

“We strongly believe this is not only a next-level move for coach Wester, but for our women’s basketball team,” Livingstone Athletic Director Lamonte Massie-Sampson said in a statement. “She is ready and eager to excel as a head coach and deliver her own coaching style to our players.”

Wester was a standout high school player at Havana Northside High in Florida and played two college seasons at North Florida, earning second-team Panhandle Conference honors both years. She transferred to Shaw in 2001 for her final two seasons, earning outstanding player, most improved and outstanding student honors.

Wester earned her degree from Shaw in 2003 and master’s from Virginia State in 2010.

“We have confidence that Coach Wester was the best choice to lead our women’s basketball team,” Livingstone President Jimmy R. Jenkins said. “Her leadership capabilities and athletic prowess are evident and we look forward to her cultivating a spirit of excellence among our student-athletes on and off the court.”
