Brayboy Gym got some major love during NBA All-Star Week.

Johnson C. Smith’s home court benefited from a $350,000 gift from Jordan Brand that will result in major upgrades to the 58-year-old building, including new scoreboards, shot clocks and seating for players and coaches.

“We had Brand Jordan over here and [they] gave us these clocks, 60 new chairs that we’re sitting on around the table, a little bench in the back the players sit on,” JCSU basketball coach Steve Joyner said. “When they come back, they’ll redo our floor, they’ll redo out locker room. We’re glad the NBA’s in town.”

When Brand Jordan organizers brought a high school basketball showcase last week to Brayboy, they immediately installed the clocks and scoreboards. The Golden Bulls debuted the equipment last week in the regular season finale against Livingstone.

“When they came over, they put in things that were more to their liking,” Joyner said. “When they left, they left a few goodies for us.”

Brayboy, which was built in 1961, has a rich basketball history. Golden Bulls legends Curly Neal and Earl “The Goat” Manigault played there, as have CIAA greats from Earl Monroe to Ben Wallace with rival squads. Human rights activists Martin Luther King, Malcolm X former secretary and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton held rallies there.

Joyner, who is also the school’s athletics director, said the upgrades make JCSU’s facilities more competitive in an environment where attracting athletes often comes down to infrastructure. The locker rooms, which are original to Brayboy, will be gutted and rebuilt to modern standards.

“It’s a big deal for us,” he said. “It’s an upgrade from what we have, and it makes us a better program.”

Thank You Brand Jordan!!!!
