Charlotte Independence takes on Richmond in USL playoff chase
Third match in seven days for 8-11-8 Jacks

It’s the end of a busy week for the Charlotte Independence.

They host Richmond Saturday at 7 p.m. for the third and final home match over the last week. A midweek international friendly against Santos Laguna of Mexico’s LigaMX ended in a 3-0 result for the visitors. Between international call-ups and minimizing minutes for starters against Santos Laguna, the Jacks’ lineup against Richmond remains in question. Coach Mike Jeffries started goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra on Wednesday after going with Brandon Miller in Charlotte’s 1-0 win against Nashville last Saturday, Charlotte’s first win since July 11. As Miller kept a clean sheet for the Jacks, and did not play in the exhibition, he will presumably start against the Kickers.

The Jacks are down to their final seven regular season games, four of which are at home. They sit 12th with 32 points (8-11-8) in the USL East, and stand 1-3-1 in their last five games. They are not out of the playoff hunt, but now would be the time to go on a run.

Richmond, by comparison, stands two spots behind the Jacks in the East, but are 10 points behind at 6-17-4. They have also gone 1-3-1 in last five games. Charlottean Austin Yearwood, a defender who spent his first two seasons as a professional with the Jacks, returns with Richmond. It’s also homecoming for fellow Charlottean Giuseppe Gentile, a striker who played in college with the Charlotte 49ers. He has yet to score for the Kickers.

Note: Four Charlotte players have received national team call-ups: midfielder Kevan George, Trinidad and Tobago; defenders Je-Vaughn Watson (Jamaica), Sam Vines (under-20 U.S. men’s national team) and Joel Johnson (Liberia).
