Charlotte’s barbers are brushing off hunger.

The sixth annual Charlotte Barbers Care food drive, which wraps up on Aug. 25, benefits Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, which provides food to the needy in greater Charlotte. The timing of the food drive coincides with the summer because food bank donations are lower this time of year.

“I have an 8-year-old daughter who watches everything I do,” said Season Bennett, co-owner of Headline Barber Shop and founder of the food driver. “I want her to know that if you see something that you don’t like in the world, we all have the power to make a difference.”

A dozen shops at 17 locations are participating in the drive, which has yielded over 43,000 pounds of food.  Monetary donations can be made online at www.charlottebarberscare.com or by texting Funds4Food to 71777. All donations go directly to Second Harvest and are tax deductible.

This year’s drive has a social media presence, #CharlotteBarbersCare, with a goal of collecting the equivalent of 10,000 pounds of food and monetary donations, with $1 equating to 7 pounds of food.

Participating barbershops include:

Kuttmasters Barber Shop

Bennett’s Barber Shop

Ultimate Barber Lounge

Xclusive Kutz

Overton’s Barber Shop

Da Lucky Spot Barber Shop
