Turning 25 suits Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer.
A 1-0 overtime victory against Longwood Friday opens a milestone campaign for the program.
Nine of Charlotte’s 18 attempts were on target, with junior defender Riley Orr’s free kick finding freshman striker Michaella Arteta and eventually junior striker Megan Greene’s header past Lancers goalkeeper Madison Van Dyke for the golden goal.
“There’s a lot of comfort in my mind, and everyone else’s mind when Riley goes up to take any set piece,” Greene said. “Since she was a freshman, she’s been putting set pieces in that anyone can get on the end of.”
Greene, a preseason All-Conference USA pick with 21 career goals, has scored five in three season openers. As a freshman, she produced two goals and the game-winner. She scored a pair in last season’s opener as well.
“You’re always hoping that she is going to score goals,” coach John Cullen said. “She’s a captain. She’s an all-conference nomination player for a reason. She’s capable of scoring goals. She had a couple chances earlier in the game. Keeper came up with great saves. We always believe that she’s going to get at least one really good chance for us. That’s what good strikers do. They try and forget about the ones that they miss, and they come back and get the next one.”
Greene has been a standout since joining Charlotte. Her presence in the attacking third has become vital to the 49ers, as all-time leading scorer Martha Thomas graduated.
“We’re going to miss Martha, and we knew that,” Cullen said. “[It’s] more responsibility on Megan, but a good start to the season for her.”
Note: Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Stapleton earned her eighth career clean sheet for the 49ers.
Charlotte heads to Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday at 2 p.m. They face Akron on Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader with the men’s program, who host Florida Golf Coast at 7 p.m.
