Dear Mom,

We did it. We raised $3,000 in 27 days for The Charlotte Post Foundation’s inaugural Mary Mahoney Memorial Scholarship; enough to fund the first two years. You nurtured so many artists in this life, and the scholarship will allow your legacy to continue to do so. It provides one Charlotte artist pursuing higher education with $1,330. Our inaugural scholarship recipient has a date at the office next week, but you’ll learn more about her soon.

Mom, yesterday you would have been 66 years young. To honor your birthday, July 18, as well as mine, June 12, the scholarship amount is $1,330 ($718 + $612). We raised $315 in the first 53 minutes, Jack’s Militia—the Charlotte Independence supporters group—raffled off a signed Enzo Martinez shirt, donating the proceeds to the scholarship last night.

Saying “thank you” seems insufficient. To everyone who donated, to you, to the wonderful organization making this possible…it doesn’t feel like enough, but it’s all I have to offer. Thank you for showing me what constant encouragement looked like. For supporting me when I decided to become a journalist instead of a lawyer. For praying for me every single day. For managing to shine despite walking through hell.

If you can do that, what excuse do we have to give anything except our best?
