Johnson C. Smith University earned a $100,00 grant for an academic makerspace at James B. Duke Memorial Library.

Libraries need space for technological innovation.

Johnson C. Smith University’s James B. Duke Memorial Library earned a $100,000 grant for “Making Space for Tech @ An HBCU.” It will fund the development of an academic Makerspace. Additionally, it will provide tools for students to hone design and technological manufacturing skills; a more desirable skillset in today’s workforce.

“This resource will allow Johnson C. Smith students to gain a competitive edge when entering the job market,” said Chantell McDowell, Makerspace project manager and instructional technology coordinator at JCSU’s Duke Memorial Library. “The Makerspace will also provide an arena for research and innovation, which we believe will lead to an increase in faculty and student-based research campus-wide, and more effective research.”

Smith earned one of 39 competitive grants for fiscal year 2017-18 given to North Carolina libraries. The total available federal grant funds was $4.4 million and available through the Institute of Museum and Library Services based on the federal Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina. The grants allow libraries to implement tools which improve literacy, as well as lifelong learning.
