Staying fit does not have to break the bank.

OrthoCarolina and #thesavageway have partnered to create #CLTFreeWorkout in six Charlotte neighborhoods (Dilworth, West Charlotte, Sedgefield, NoDa, Cherry and Wilmore).

Incorporating clean graffiti for six workouts designed by OrthoCarolina physician assistant Aaron Hewitt, the exercises center on using bodyweight rather than equipment. The program allows participants to avoid buying a gym membership as well as the self-conscious feelings that can be associated with exercise in a crowded area.

“The experience of working out can sometimes be just as important as the workout itself,” OrthoCarolina CEO Bruce Cohen said. “Exercise can seem intimidating, whether the reasons are physical, mental or even financial, but it’s something we know is an important element of a healthy lifestyle.”

Said Hewitt: “It's really just about becoming more active.”

Placed on sidewalks, the start of each workout has an indicator reading “Start Your #CLTFreeWorkout here.” Each workout station consists of 800-1,000 feet, six phases and should be repeated five times.

“Sometimes just taking that first step to get out there and give it a try can encourage the inner athlete in all of us,” Cohen said.

Said Hewitt: “Sedentary jobs are at an all-time high. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity, five times a week.  And almost 70 percent of Americans are either classified as overweight or obese. How about combating those statistics with a fun, free exercise routine in your community?”
